Just noticed on the Stew Mac dreadnought plans, the bridge plate appears to be let in to notches in the X-braces. Does anybody do this?

Wes,

I've seen a number of guitars on my benches over the years for bridge plate replacement with those "tucked in" plates.

They are extremely difficult and touchy to remove and replace. you have to actually cut the old plate in half across its length without getting into the top from the inside of the guitar. This allows it to be removed in two pieces as it's heated and lifted with the special curved pry chisels that we use for the job.

Each time I replaced them, I did so with a bridge plate that met the "X" beaces with a butt joint instead of tucking the new one in. This allows another twenty or thirty years to pass before the plate has to be replaced again and the next guy to have the pleasure of doing it will have much less trouble than I.

There's really no need to put them into the braces or the braces onto others with the quality of glues that we have available to us today.
